Music Practice Tip 17: Express Yourself
Why are you playing music? Whether you are playing yourself or instructing a child to practice, have you ever had a discussion about why you/they are playing? Music is a universal language and a beautiful way to learn to express yourself, whether you are in a good, bad, happy or sad mood… It expands your brain. It can provide social connections, whether by playing with others or for others. You can lose yourself in it if you need a break from reality… It can cheer you up, console you.
What is your favorite music to play and why? Is it the same favorite as the music you like to listen too? Do you like to sing along with yourself (if you are on an instrument that lends itself to this)? Do you like playing by yourself, with friends, for an audience? What does playing do for you? Are you interested in working hard to improve your ability, or just fumbling thru to escape from stresses of your day?
What can you do to improve your expressions. Imagine what your music is about, and practice with this picture in mind. If it helps, draw a picture of what the music reminds you of. Play for family, pets, stuffed animals, friends and neighbors. Plan a recital to motivate yourself to work harder towards a goal.
One last thing that I have neglected a bit is recommending that you listen to others playing your music. Listen to many musicians and see if you can hear and feel the difference in their musical expressions of the same piece.
