French Impressionist Flute Solos
1. "Prelude to the Afternoon of a Fawn" by Claude Debussy first performed in 1894, was considered the beginning of modern music by Pierre Boulez. It was Debussy's response to a poem by Stephane Malarme, who was reportedly not happy about his poem being the basis for music. It was later made into a ballet first performed in 1912. The piece is not a musical "prelude".
2. "Pavanne" in F-sharp Minor, Op. 50 by Gabriel Faure in 1887. It has the rhythm of a Spanish court dance of the same name. Originally a piano piece, the orchestral version (optional chorus about the romantic helplessness of man) is better known. Ravel and Debussy copied his idea and wrote their own pavannes. Ravel was a composition student of Fauure.
3. "Daphnis et Chloe" is a one act ballet composed by Maurice Ravel and premiered in 1912. The "choreographic symphony" scenerio was adapted by Michel Fokine from a 2nd century AD Greek romance about the love between goatherd Daphnis and the shepherdess Chloe.
